What We Know
Chance Leslie Englebert was a 25-year-old dad and husband who had just started a new job in Moorcroft, Wyoming before he mysteriously disappeared during a Fourth of July weekend family get-together on July 6th, 2019.
Originally from Edgemont, South Dakota, Chance was into rodeo during high school and later attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming. There, he studied welding and diesel mechanics.
On July 6, 2019, Chance and his wife Baylee visited her grandparents in Gering, Nebraska. While there, Chance went golfing with some of Baylee’s family members. While on the golf course, he had an argument with them and called Baylee to pick him up so they could go back to their home in Wyoming.
Instead, she took him back to Baylee’s grandparents’ house. Upset because he wanted to go home, Chance went for a walk to cool down, something he’d do occasionally.
When Chance was out of sight, Baylee tried to find him but couldn’t. She spoke to him on his cell phone around 7:46 pm when he said he was walking south. However, his friends later said that he told them he was heading north toward Torrington, Wyoming.
The last person to talk to Chance was his friend Matt Miller at around 8:46 pm. His aunt received a mysterious text from him just after 9 pm, and his phone died or was switched off soon after.
A powerful storm hit Gering around 9 pm that night, so Chance’s family thought he might have taken shelter in a local business or nearby building. Baylee’s grandfather drove around looking for him but found nothing, and no one has heard from Chance since then.
When he disappeared, Chance was 25 years old, a white male with a medium build, about 5’11” tall, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a short sleeve button-up Wrangler shirt, dark blue Wrangler jeans, Roper-style boots, and a black-and-white trucker-style cap.
When Chance didn’t come back by the next morning, his family told the local police, who started looking into what happened and searching for him. Lots of different groups and hundreds of people joined in to search on the ground and from the air. They also used special dog teams and teams to search nearby water areas, but they couldn’t find Chance.
On the night he went missing, Chance was seen on a security camera around 10 pm walking near some businesses at an intersection in Terrytown, Nebraska. After he disappeared, people thought they might have seen him in Wyoming and Nebraska, including maybe talking to a woman at a Walmart in Casper, Wyoming. The police checked out this clue and watched six hours of surveillance footage from the Walmart, but they couldn’t say for sure if it was Chance.
The Gering Police Department doesn’t have any suspects yet, but they’re still getting tips and checking them all out. Although they don’t have proof of any crime happening, they can’t say for sure that nothing bad happened either. One idea they’ve heard from a few people is that Chance might have vanished because a robbery went wrong. The police are looking into that possibility.
In October 2021, someone found a human arm bone near the North Platte River in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. At first, they thought it might be Chance Englebert, but DNA test results are still pending. Since they found a piece of cloth with the bone that doesn’t match what Chance was wearing when he disappeared, it’s probably not his, but the investigators won’t know for sure until they get the final DNA results.
There’s a $17,000 reward for anyone who can help find Chance or figure out who’s responsible for his going missing. If you have any information, you can call the Gering Police Department at 308-436-5088.
Chance’s disappearance has been a heartbreaking experience for his family, especially his wife Baylee and their infant son. His friends and family remember him as a good father, a hard worker, and a kind person. They continue to hold out hope that he will be found safe and sound, or at least receive answers about what happened to him.
While law enforcement agencies and private investigators continue to work on the case, Chance’s loved ones are doing everything they can to keep his story alive and to spread the word about his disappearance. They hope that by sharing his story, someone will come forward with information that will help them find him or bring justice to those responsible for his disappearance.
