Hey, y’all. Thanks for stopping by. Today, I’m recapping the latest episode of Disappeared New Mom Missing. As a bonus to the recap, you also get my commentary, which I know you all want (sarcasm). Let’s get into it.
Bring out the family
The episode opens with our missing person’s mother. Kelly Locklair tells us a little about her daughter Ciera Breland. Ciera was a successful attorney who was sweet and bubbly, but also tough. Toughness is required in the legal field. Kelly thinks that Ciera became interested in law because Kelly was a paralegal. Here’s something you might not know about me: I am a paralegal at my 9 to 5. It’s not for the weak. You have to have tough skin.
Now we meet Shelby Campbell, Ciera’s cousin. She tells us that Ciera was only five feet tall but she had a much bigger personality than her height. She looks very petite and young in all the photos of her. Even when we see her holding her newborn baby, she could pass for a teenager. She is 31 years old. I only say that to say that she probably fought against her appearance as an attorney. I imagine that she was underestimated in her career.
Ciera’s dad Nick Locklair makes my heart break. He tells us that Ciera was a daddy’s girl. Nick never liked Ciera to date, which maybe wasn’t the best parenting strategy. But I’m not a parent, so I probably shouldn’t give out advice.
Shelby tells us about how Ciera decided to start online dating around 2020. If you remember the dark days of 2020, we had nothing to do but stare at the same four walls and our phones. Luckily (or unluckily?), Ciera met a handsome guy named Xavier Breland. He is very handsome. I mean look at him. I can see why Ciera swiped right.
Sidenote: like Ciera, I met my boyfriend on Tinder in 2020 also. We are so happy and in love and I don’t think he has plans to murder me. That I know of. If you read this, babe, let me know if I’m wrong about the murder plans.
Anyway, Ciera was immediately smitten with Xavier. Xavier treated her like a queen and constantly complimented her. Love bombing, maybe? If the story doesn’t go where it does, I would probably not think much of this, but Xavier might just be manipulation Ciera.
In April of 2021, the couple got married via Zoom. We live in weird times. Not that this means you have to get married, but Ciera was pregnant at the time of their wedding. Her family was surprised by all of this because Ciera never wanted marriage or children, but she was excited about having a family.
After they tied the knot, Ciera and Xavier moved to Carmel, Indiana, from Georgia to be closer to Xavier’s father. Later that year, they have a son: Jackson. Everyone says that Ciera loved being a mom.
Where is Ciera?
In February 2022, Ciera and Xavier made the ten-hour drive back to Georgia to visit Xavier’s mother and let her spend time with her new grandson. Ciera was last seen a few days after they arrived in Georgia.
Ciera had text her dad while she was in Georgia to say that she didn’t feel well. Like she was really sick. That was the last time Nick spoke to Ciera. I’m wondering if this was actually Ciera or someone else laying tracks for an accidental death. It wouldn’t be the first time. Xavier has her phone by the time police are involved, which is…interesting.
On Saturday, February 26, Ciera’s parents received a phone call from a number in Carmel, Indiana. As far as they knew, Ciera was still in Georgia. But the police in Indiana called them to tell them that their daughter had been reported missing. Ciera’s dad is so upset and I feel for him in this moment.
Now we meet Officer Eric Rozier, an investigator in Johns Creek, Georgia, the town where Ciera was last seen and where Xavier’s mother lives. He tells us that Xavier reported Ciera missing on February 26. He also says that Xavier was frantic, pacing and nervous when police arrive.
According to Xavier, Ciera had left on foot the night before after the couple had an argument. What did they argue about? Adderall if you believe Xavier. He says that Ciera had run out of her prescription and wanted to take some of Xavier’s. I assume both of them have prescriptions for these meds, but the show doesn’t really say.
Xavier said he wanted to give Ciera a chance to cool off so he left her alone when she walked off. Makes sense. Here’s what doesn’t make sense. Ciera left her phone, wallet, and keys at home with Xavier. Xavier thought that she might have gone to the nearby pharmacy to refill her prescription. But refilling a C2 med with no ID? Doesn’t make sense. And why wouldn’t she drive there? Sus, if you ask me.
Police found no damage at the home or sign of a struggle. Xavier’s dad lived next door, and he had outdoor cameras. Ciera wasn’t seen on them that night. She also wasn’t seen on the surveillance footage at the pharmacy. Cops canvassed the neighborhood and businesses to try and find her on camera somewhere. They didn’t have any luck.
The K-9 unit was brought in to track Ciera, but they never picked up on her scent. Not even in the car that she supposedly rode home in for ten or more hours from Georgia. The dogs are really good boys anyway.
There’s no evidence that Ciera even left Georgia, so Carmel PD contacts the Johns Creek PD in Georgia.
Toxic, toxic, toxic
Now Ciera’s family tells us the truth about Ciera and Xavier’s marriage.
At Christmas 2021, (a few months before her disappearance), the pair looked rough. Ciera had lost weight and she had dark circles under her eyes. They spent the night that Christmas at a hotel instead of her parents’ home.
Why the haggard look? Ciera tells her family that Xavier’s ex-wife was dating someone in the cartel and she was frightened. She thought they were being followed. Scary.
Supposedly, this ex had several businesses registered in variations of her name, which is a bad sign, I guess? I didn’t really understand the significance of this if I’m being honest. If you know why this is damning, let me know in the comments.
Ciera contacted the FBI who told her that the ex and her new man were involved in human trafficking and told her to be careful about what she said and did. So did the cartel kill her because of Xavier’s ex? This makes no sense to me. I discounted it immediately.
Mom Kelly says what I was thinking. Xavier was lying about all of this as a way to control Ciera and keep her dependent on him. Classic trauma bonding. Ciera thinks she needs Xavier to protect her. I think this is the real story.
As if Xavier wasn’t looking bad enough, we find out that Xavier was possessive and controlling. He would go through her phone and accused her of cheating. He even once said that maybe Jackson wasn’t his son.
The problem was compounded by the COVID-19 shutdowns. Ciera started working from home so she never got away from Xavier. Xavier didn’t work and Ciera supported the family.
Xavier’s paranoia was getting worse and worse. Eventually the abuse evolved from verbal and psychological to physical. Ciera sent photos of injuries to her mother for safe keeping.
Ciera’s mom wonders if Ciera suffered from battered women’s syndrome, which I totally buy. Xavier was charming and sweet in the beginning and now Ciera feels like she can’t leave. She tells her dad it’s perfect 96% of the time. He disagrees with her, but she is an adult.
Cousin Shelby says that Ciera told her that she couldn’t leave Xavier because she was afraid of him getting custody of their son. So Ciera did the thing that all women who want to get out of bad marriages do. She started squirreling money away in a secret account. She had plans to move back home to Georgia.
At this point, police search the home of Xavier’s mother. Police weren’t sure if she was actually there or not. A neighbor had footage of Ciera’s car driving by, but you can’t tell who is driving it. Just that there’s a person in the driver’s seat and Ciera’s dog Baker in the passenger seat. Was this Ciera or Xavier?
The FBI got involved and offered a $10,000.00 reward for information about her disappearance. They got tips from people claiming they had seen her that never panned out.
Cell phone records put Ciera at the Chattahoochee River, which is near Xavier’s mothers home. She was there for a while, so police searched the area but found no clues.
They did find a video that confirmed that Ciera had been at her mother in law’s house on February 23. Police get a search warrant for the home. According to Officer Rozier, evidence was found, but he couldn’t discuss it because the case is ongoing. I would love to know what they found.
Next police started looking at surveillance footage at gas stations on Xavier’s way back to Indiana. They see him on camera several times getting gas, but Ciera is never seen. Shelby says that’s crazy because Ciera had a Diet Dr Pepper addiction and wouldn’t have gone that long without getting one. And honestly, same Ciera. Except I’m addicted to regular Dr Pepper. It just burns in the best way.
Xavier is shady
So a private investigator got a video of Xavier on a Zoom call with his children telling them that Ciera had been kidnapped and wasn’t coming back. Weird, because he never mentioned kidnapping to the police. This video is not a good look for Xavier, and the public turned on him. He lost any sympathy he had.
During a background check, police find out that there is a warrant out for his arrest for stalking that ex wife. They arrest him on the stalking charge, but they still had no evidence to hold him for Ciera’s disappearance. And he’s found not guilty of the stalking charges. He seems like a really fun guy.
At this point, police have no hard evidence on Xavier. I learned from the Phoenix Wright series of video games that you really need hard evidence for a conviction.
The fact that Xavier is a scary creep doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a murderer. But Ciera’s family believes he did something to Ciera and I agree with them.
The family isn’t as hopeful that Ciera is still alive because so much time has passed.
If you don’t watch Disappeared, you really should start. It’s so fascinating and it does good work in keeping this victims in the public eye which will hopefully lead to some of them being found.
What do I think happened? I think that maybe Xavier found out about Ciera’s plan to leave and confronted her. An argument escalated and Ciera ended up dead. Where is her body? I couldn’t say. But I hope her family gets closure one day.
